Happy
new year! Below
is our journal of batch newsmakers and events that made big splash last year.
It's far from comprehensive, limited mainly to what came through our egroup (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spcm_hs75). Accompanying pictures and complete narratives can be
viewed at our very own www.Paulinians.com.
In
case of corrections and additions, please email SPCM HS75 Webkeeper at spcm_hs75@hotmail.com. Thanks and everybody, have a good 2004!

December 23, 2003
Dear Classmates,
First of all, allow me to greet everyone a very Merry Christmas!
Have been remiss in my duties to the batch. You will have to forgive me during this
times cuz I have to do work for my other school - De La Salle University. Was trying to avoid getting involved but got
swept in the fray due to the insistence of the husband of one of ours - none
other than Dettie Tesoro’s Tom Carunungan. He got involved much earlier but
just couldn't resist getting me in cuz he always remembers our 2000 homecoming
and he wanted DLSU’s to have a semblance of ours. So I’m now part of the
committee that will make a Souvenir that Tom calls a Collector's Item for La
Sallites. Anyway, this is payback time
for me since Tom and Kiko went all-out to support us in 2000. Let me tell you though, it's not the same
working with high school classmates; it feels like we Paulinians shared more
experiences and grew up more tightly together. But it's ok rin to be with
college buddies again especially since my barkada has been meeting regularly.
REMINDER: Pearl
Jubilarians tayo in 2005. Start planning your vacation this early. Touched base
with Sol Ilagan HS’65 at the Vigil House. Sabay-sabay tayo mag-ju-jubilarian
along with sina Sarita Jovellanos and Chona Dizon of SPCM HS’80, and Ms Simon HS’70. Zamby, Janet, Lia and I are planning a group
lakwatsa sa Palawan - January 2005. And of course, we will plan out TIPAR 2005
also. Hope Ma'am Malu will still be
here to help out. Nawawalan na ako ng
aking mga committee chairs. Mae is in
the US. Lia is in Palawan. Zamby is in Canada. Ano ba iyan? Well, basta, let’s plan na.
Merry Christmas and a
happy new year to all.

My dear Paulinians,
First, congratulations to
all your successes and praise be the Lord for all the happy events that
happened to you! May He be blest, too, for the not so pleasant ones.
May the LOVE of Jesus Christ hold you
and His PEACE reign in your homes
His PRESENCE be your strength always!
Have a JOY-filled Christmas and a
Grace-filled New Year!
"May every bit of creation be a sacrament of God's love for
you."

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, IBM-EMEA Marketing
Operations Manager Brenda Martinez-Eslinger organized Muay Thai fundamental
kickboxing sessions that taught basic self-defense and wellness in Hampshire,
England, on 5 Oct 2003. Proceeds went to Breast Cancer Care, Britain's prime
breast cancer support group.
Lowdown from Brenda:
Finally got around to organizing a Breast Cancer Fundraiser, after
uhm-ing and ahh-ing about the logistics. Have organised a Thai Kickboxing
event, called 'Fight for a Cure' in support of the charity Breast Cancer Care.
Event date is 5th Oct, so not long now. I think the charity was quite surprised
by the theme when I approached them about it, however they must've liked the
photos we sent them, as they put the link to my site well at the top of the
page. Here's the link to Breast Cancer Care: http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk
.
If you do get a chance, pls check out my website and sign the
guestbook at http://www.fightforacure.org.uk
. I'd love to have a few words from people who've had their lives touched by
BC. Requesting all Paulinians to sign the guestbook on my new website. Please,
please sign!

Mae -- our Ambivalent Crowd / Balahibo Rock Band veteran soloist,
Blackgold / Vicor recording artist, Hyatt Regency Calesa Music Bar alumna, SPCM
HS'75 Alumnae Relations Coordinator, University of California Office of the
President Alumni Affairs / Special Events Administrator – took a much-needed
breather in 2003. Definitely not by choice though – she had a couple of bike
accidents unfortunately resulting in a frozen shoulder. On top of that, her
Honda Accord was stolen too! The resilient person that she is, Mae's certainly
on her way back – the 25 Oct dinner-dance fundraiser she hosted for the Most
Holy Rosary Church of Antioch's Fil-Am Club was sold-out and a complete
success, Mae wrote: "The dinner-dance
went well in October. My boss watched me perform for the first time. Now he has
to think twice before asking me to fax something (ha!). My co-workers are
already planning on what to wear for the next dinner dance!"

the 2003 Annual Pistahan Trade and Cultural Expo at the Yerba Buena Gardens'
Esplanade on Mission St in SFO, held last August 9-10.
In typical Louella fashion,
her personal invitation comically read:
"May
I please invite all of you and yours to the Tenth Anniversary of PISTAHAN, an
annual Filipino community event in San Francisco, to be held on August 9 and
10. Ako ang emcee of the shows and I will parade on a float, entertain, strip -
if I pay them enough money to let me! Do I need to spruce up my "personal
image" by training with Rowe '81? I know she has a reputation to keep.
Challenge ito ha! Ano kaya ang magandang image, parang leave it to image...image-ination!
But please parang awa niyo na I will pay you just to be an audience, maraming

Mae Cendaña's daughter, UC Berkeley junior Tallulah Danielle
"Dae" David SPC Pasig HS'00, auditioned and was handpicked to open
the 26 Sept Literary and Performance Night of Kearny Street Workshop's APAture
'03 -- a showcase of Asian Pacific American artists in the Bay Area held at the
SomArts Cultural Center in downtown San Francisco. The official event website
read:
"TALLULAH DANIELLE C. DAVID picked up a guitar 3 years ago and has been writing songs ever since. She has sung at UC Berkeley events such as the Pilipino Association benefit concert, What's Going On?, Annual Maganda Magazine publication launchings, and open mics hosted by Theatre Rice! and the Asian Pacific American Student Development organization. Aside from singing, Tallulah serves as the Youth Mentorship Coordinator under the Berkeley Pilipino Academic Student Services, extending mentorship programs to Pilipino Youth around the Bay Area." (Source: KSW's APAture 2003 Artists -- http://kearnystreet.org/programs/ksw-next/apature2003/artists/participating_artists.html )
Dae sang her own original compositions at APAture and her
performance went really well. Her close friends from grade school (all the way
from Kindergarten), high school and college, along with family were on hand to
give support. The following were some of the actual audience feedback, found in
www.poeticdream.com:
"She plays the guitar so well for
someone who just picked it up three years ago…"
"Congratulations, Mae. Dae's got
your genes. All the best, Dae!"
"I thought that was you! good luck
on prop 54. No all the way! "
"Very talented musician with a
beautiful voice...cute too =)"
"Cal Berkeley's Tallulah David. Cool
voice, pretty face!"
"Cute! Ain't got nothin but
thumbs-up for you, baby!"
"This is a cute girl with a smile
and a guitar!"

Mikey Velasco was 3rd Honors of De La Salle Zobel's high school
class of 2003. His schoolmates would probably best remember him as the
cameraman, director and editor of the JS Prom video presentation that
documented his batch's journey from kindergarten through high school. The film
was such a hit, even high society columnist Maurice Arcache (who calls readers
dahlings and palanggas) got wind of it – he was all-praises for it in
Philippine Star.
A DLS Loyalty Awardee, Mikey is now an Electronics and
Communications Engineering freshman at his parents' alma mater, De La Salle Taft.

Pinky Marquez' daughter
Karel co-stars in ABS-CBN / TFC hit
shows Berks and ASAP Mania. A high
school senior at Reedley International School, she's a 2003 Star Awards Best Newcomer
nominee and one of the Philippines' hottest new TV personalities today. Her
recent TV guestings include ABS-CBN / TFC's Teysi (with Pinky!), Star Studio
Presents, Feel at Home, Victim, Tara Tena, Morning Girls (latest was on 1 Jan
2004), Maalaala Mo Kaya, Wansapanataym,
Magandang Tanghali Bayan, Kool on Kam (ABC-5) and more - quite impressive considering that she just
started her first regular show (Berks) in late 2002! After a long audition
process where literally hundreds of aspiring video jockeys competed, Karel was
picked last Dec 5 as one the three new ABS-CBN/TFC Studio 23 VJ's; on 28 Dec,
she began working as a VJ on Mellow MYX, Pop MYX, My MYX and Take 5! Come Jan 5
on Studio 23, Karel will again add a new line to her bio – that of being a host
on the ABS-CBN news gag show, Waszup waszup!
Aside from being an actress, Karel is also a much sought-after
print and commercial model. Shewas the Oct 2003 cover girl of Chalk, Pink, and
Star Magazines. Her latest multimedia ads include Close Up, Lee Pipes and
Pond's.

Kab Budhrani (San Agustin HS'98) graduated from the intensive
5-year MS Information Technology program at University of Asia and the Pacific in
2003. Initially, he planned to start a company dealing strictly with computers.
A born businessman, he decided instead to go diversified – he opened a
combination restaurant / billiard / internet-pc gaming establishment called
"The Venue". Located on the second floor of EGI Pagibig Taft Tower
near DLSU, it's a 100-seat eatery with 26 PC internet and gaming stations and 6
billiard tables. Eat and fun, something for everyone – Bina and family are
inviting all Paulinians and friends to drop by anytime.

Pita Revilla's actor sons BJ and Miko Palanca rose to even greater
showbiz heights in 2003. BJ and his all-star boyband "The Hunks"
spent a good part of the year performing in concert tours all over the US
Mainland, Hawaii, Japan and the Middle East. He and girlfriend Rica Peralejo
starred in a hit ABS-CBN/TFC soap opera entitled "Kay tagal kang hinintay"
where they pitted talents with industry heavyweights including Lorna Tolentino
and Johnny Delgado. These two ABS-CBN/TFC "ASAP Mania" mainstays also
played reel-life lovebirds in episodes of "Maalaala mo kaya", and
"Ok fine whatever" among others.
As a follow-on to his earlier teleserye "K2BU", BJ's
younger brother Miko was in the cast of ABS-CBN/TFC's "Buttercup".
For the longest time, TFC viewers also saw him everyday as the star of the
ubiquitous "This guys in love with you" music-video. He and BJ had
joint appearances in many shows including ASAP and Morning Girls with Kris and
Korina. Not-so-known fact about Miko: he received a bachelor's degree in
business administration at the young age of 19!

Patty Froelich graduated in Spring 2003 with a bachelor's degree
in Advertising from the University of Florida where she was an Orlando Sentinel
/ Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale Scholar. In their family's Xmas 2003 journal,
proud parents Joyce and Dave wrote: "The job market as bad as it was this
year, it was no surprise our new graduate was thrilled to land a job in her
field of Public Relations in May in Orlando. She represents writers and gets
them published in other media. Not surprising that the new job spawned a new
car too. She looks great in her new Audi A4!"
In a USA Today (Money Section) top story entitled "Young
workers say their age holds them back" published last October, Patty
revealed the trick in landing a job, particularly how to add experience and
maturity to a young job applicant's look:
"During my job search, I had much
more of a challenge making myself look older, since I am often mistaken for
16," says Patricia Froelich, 21, a publicist in Orlando. "I tried my
hardest to look older — using everything from fake reading glasses (to) more
conservative clothing and carrying a briefcase." (Source: http://www.usatoday.com/money/workplace/2003-10-07-reverseage_x.htm
)
It worked. Congratulations, Patty!

4 Jan, Makati. Pinky Marquez, Sunny Escareal, Dolly
Tesoro, Janette San Juan
Hernandez, Zamby Arnaiz, Myra Henson,
Daisy Santillan welcome Vancouver's Mona Trinidad and WV's Cherry Lobaton.
Sunny Escareal's scoop:
First of all, let me tell you that Cherry Ann has not changed a
bit. Kalog pa rin. Very proud of her husband. Ooops, Tagalugin ko nga pala daw
para hindi maintindihan ng asawa pag binukas ang e-mail niya. O siya! Maski mas
mahirap...
Ang kwento nga pala ni Cherry pagkatapos ng pag-graduate sa St.
Paul's, magkasama sila nina Myra and Tawi sa UPLB. Eh tinakwil daw siya doon.
Gustong-gusto mag-doctor kaya't after finishing her BS at UPLB in 1980, lumipat
siya sa Lyceum Northwestern where she received her MD in '84.
After completing her residency in family practice at Michigan
State University's Genesys Regional Medical Center in '98, she moved east to
West Virginia. She has her own family practice clinic in Martinsburg
(approximately 100 miles from Wash DC) and her husband works with her. They
went to Palawan for a short vacation and did nothing but have massages the
whole time cuz it's so cheap here. Short stay kasi alangan naman bugbog masahe
na lang sila. Her kid is so cute. Mukhang pilyo manang-mana kay Cherry Ann.
In addition to Cherry, the other balikbayan of the day was
Vancouver BC's Mona Trinidad, in town to attend her parents' golden wedding
anniversary. Mona wrote: "We had a very nice time at our lunch with Cherry
and family in attendance. Anyway, I'd like to thank Dolly, Sunny, Janette,
Myra., Zamby and of course Pinky, for hosting the very delicious lunch. It was
a nice time to get together since I was home for a holiday this time around. My
thanks also go to Daisy and Sunny for the gifts. My stay was made so much nicer
with this get-together. My family was able to meet up with us as we were
finishing off with coffee."

3 Apr – 3 May 2003: The Velascos –- Sunny Escareal, hubby Kiko,
and sons Enzo and Mikey -– flew in from
Manila for a US coast-coast tour and reunion with batchmates.
Sunny's outbrief:
* Arrived in SF on April 3 and stayed with Erika for one night. It
was drizzling. Told Erika, I brought that with me from the Phils. Bad weather. Chika, chika until wee hours of the morning. Tony was kind enough to bring us to the
airport the next day for 9 am flight to Boston. Turns out, it was snowing in Boston and our flight was cancelled
because nag-freeze daw ang eroplano. So we had to go via St. Louis. Wow! Mahilo-hilo kami when we got there. But
on the flight to Boston, I guess, nakakain na kami and we were so tired, we
just slept through it. Guess what, it
was freezing cold in Boston. (Dala ko
na naman?) That night, it started
snowing. (Snow in April?) It's supposed to be spring time, diba? Well, I got what i wished for. I wanted to see snow and we got it. Two days later, more snow. So the kids and I
had a snow ball fight in the park. Even
saw reindeers running around in one of the houses of Wally's friend. Maski, nanginginig na kami sa lamig, OK pa
rin.
* April 12 reunion at Yuvienco residence. In attendance - Maisa, Ching, Shella, Mitzi,
Lilibeth, Annabelle, Moi and Ms. Rombawa.
We (the Velascos) arrived in Conn. by Amtrak the day before while the
rest of the group (except for Annabelle) drove from NY with Mitzi at the
wheel. Annabelle drove from Amherst,
Mass. As usual, food galore na
naman. Had fun exploring Maisa's house which
she decorated herself. Ganda the
basement which she did in red, black and white. She was also featured in a newspaper in Iowa for her interior
design of their basement in their Iowa home…
The next day, we heard Mass in their cute church and loved the way
they presented Palm Sunday. Very solemn. After that, Maisa brought us to see
the USS Nautilus and then we went to Mystic Seaport. We only had 15 minutes on board the submarine but we really
enjoyed just walking around Mystic which was so quaint.
* Next day, we (along with my sister Wally/Maria/Rosario HS'71)
flew to Florida. Good thing, Kiko's brother,
Joe, works for Horizons-Marriott and we were able to enjoy a lot of perks. Don;t have to say anything about Disneyworld
and Universal that you guys don't know about.
Basta we had fun.
Had dinner with Joyce Tioseco, Dave and Patty –- The Froelichs --
on our last night in Orlando. Told Dave
I really enjoyed Universal and it really was a pity we only allocated one day
for both Universal and Islands of Adventure.
Well, all the more reason to come back.
Mikey said it looks like one huge resort.
We ended past midnight and tiredly went back to the hotel. Three days of non-stop walking? We never did that in the Phils. Ayan,
bagsak kaming lahat (even Wally).
Kulang talaga ang 5 days in Orlando.
* Easter Sunday - quietly
spent in Boston and we just drove around and looked at the rest of the historic
sites like Paul Revere's house (did you know he was small? His house and bed
were small.) Faneuil Hall, the Old NOrth Church and Bunker Hill.
* Next day, Mitzi and Bob drive to Boston to pick us up and then
back to NY. The three nights we were
there, we stayed up till way past midnight just swapping stories while Mikey
and Enzo had such great fun playing on their computers (tatlo kasi).
Tuesday, Mitzi and the Velascos went to West Point. Kodakan and Mitzi had fun with her digital
camera, click ng click.
Next day, Mitzi took us to the train station and we met with Ching
at the Grand Central Station. Went to
Ground Zero where we were met by Shella.
And then the Amazing Race began.
We went to all the known spots in NY except Central Park (which we saw
from a distance), Empire State and Madison (which btw, we saw on our way home
to Boston). Sabi nga ni Kiko, parang
hinahapo siya just trying to keep up with Shella and Ching. Tapos, sa kakadaldal namin, we rode the wrong train. But what was really fun was the kwentuhan
during lunch and merienda.
When we got back to Grand Central, we wanted to take our sweet
time before we went back to Newburgh.
Turned out we only had 10 minutes to catch our trip. Otherwise, late na
kami makakauwi. So rush na naman kami to the train. We were so sleepy on the ride to NY, we fell asleep. Hindi ko
tuloy nakita and scenery. Pauwi na lang
sa Boston, kodakan pa sa Madison Square. 4 hours to Boston - slept most of the
time.
* Boston - rest, peace and quiet and rested our aching feet. Was supposed to fly to SF Monday but I had
what I thought was an asthma attack.
Ayun, we were still able to
squeeze in Cape Cod.
* SF - arrived in Erika's house gabi na. Stupid me read while on the plane with these reading glasses
which we bought in Boston. Mali. Still felt bad the next day when we went to
Marlou's house for lunch. Cecile was
also there. They couldn't make it to
Mae's house kasi the next day, so they decided to treat us for lunch na
lang. Sarap the food.
* Next day, May 2, Erika, Mae and I (along with Kiko) celebrated
our birthdays in Mae's house in San Leandro, CA. First we picked up Mae and then had lunch in Emeryville. Walked
around the UC Berkeley campus where Dae studies. WE then proceeded to Mae's house. First time for me to visit
Mae's new house. Our kids were there -
Louie, Dae, Mikey and Enzo along with Mae's friend Tom Torlakson, who just
happens to be a California Senator and was kind enough to do barbeque our
steaks. (as requested by Erika). After
dinner, Mae kicked off our karaoke singing with the song
"Butsiki." Sus, kaibigan pala
niya si Yoyoy Villame. Non-stop singing na after that. Mae is such a powerful belter! Sabi nga ni Kiko, para daw kaming nanood ng
concert. Then we all took our
turns. Kiko and Mae sang Endless
Love. Ganda. Then ang mga malalakas ang loob, tried singing Bohemian Rhapsody,
complete with head-banging courtesy of Mae, Dae and moi. WE had to leave at around 1030 pm. It was really a fun day.
* Flight back to Manila - gabi.
So shopping pa sa umaga. :o)

24-29 Jun, LA - Rocky Yupangco, Shella Navarro, Erika Miranda,
Mitzi Ambion met up in Marina del Rey CA.
Remember those four friends who gathered
in London?
Well they met again, but this time
there's less one
Brenda's tight schedule prevented attending
The California reunion we knew that was
pending
So again we meet, Mitzi, Rocky and Shella
But this time a surprise attendee is our
Erika
From San Francisco she flew in
simultaneous
The evenings of laughter & texting
hilarious
Thoughts of Pinoy food was often quite
prevalent
So four friends to Cerritos for
Goldilocks was frequent
Dozens of viands appeared by the platter
To feed a small army with bad eating
manners
Gulping and chewing and sipping and
burping
Oh what a mess the table was looking
But as all the food began to disappear
Happier smiles started to appear
Rocky developed a weird adobo fetish
Erika preferred lumpia, halo-halo and
bopis
Mitzi and barbecue seemed quite attached
Shella just chewed on whatever was laid
flat
Then came the shopping and gazing and
walking
To the shops on Rodeo the famous drive
we're talking
Trying and poking and endless discussions
Should I get this on charge, credit or
pass on?
During the walk a brown leather bag is
spied
60% off now that's a great price
I'll get that bag, an investment, Rocky
thought
Which the other girls further agreed with
a nod
Go get it Rocks, Mitzi did whisper
She said it was bagay to me… a further
whisper
Ang galing ni Mitzi as sales girl I
thought
Siguro may cut siya sa bag that I bought
Oh of course don't forget good ole J.
Crew
These stylish bandanas that Erika, Mitzi
and Shella clung to
Six or seven outlets forever we stormed
Would you happen to have these bandanas
in store?!
"They were last season, we have no
more
but maybe you could go to our other
stores"
So to the next store, and the next we
went
So instead we saved money that we could
have spent
Oh by the way, I think all gals should
know
That aside from laughing and joking,
Erika drove
A real Nicki Lauda she is on the freeway
Although Shella did cling to her seat as
we sped away
So now that I've told all that needs
telling
The 5-day story of friends again
descending
Funny enough we met in a resort
But never did any swimming or diving of
the sort
So bye for now Mitzi, Shella and Erika
Maybe next year we will be four + dear
Brenda
I think we did mention Mexico or
something
But Shella it's your turn to choose our
next outing
It's always great fun to see sweet dear
faces
Still the same but with more lines and
creases
May we continue to age sweetly together
While maintaining fun and continued
laughter.

9 Oct, Alabang Town
Center: Dolly and Dettie Tesoro, Sunny Escareal, Ditas Santos, Florian Nuval
and our high school teacher Ms Jo Francisco relived old times, especially CAT
days.
Sunny Escareal's recap:
Met up with Ms. Jo Francisco Reyes and just as I mentioned in my
previous e-mail, she looks good and very fit as you can see in the
picture. Florian, Dettie, Dolly and
Ditas were the only ones who could make it.
But as I said before, whether 4 or 100, it's still fun to meet up.
We had fun reminiscing
about the CAT Bivouac and she told us some insights that we didn't know
before. First of all, she was so mad
about the facilities and really wanted to bring all of you out of there when
she saw it. Turns out that the St.
Scholasticans were also brought to that area and that they stayed there for 2
nights. According to the navy
personnel, the Kulasas were better behaved and more disciplined than the
Paulinians. Natural, kailan ba tayo naging behaved? What was so unfair was that the year before us, batch of my
sister Weng, went to Corregidor and the facilities were much better than that
of Ternate.
What really brought the house down was when they told the story
about Erika and group who had to go in the dark and in the still of the night, they
were screaming because they stepped on an anthill! All the ones assigned to
patrol that time were given demerits for being so noisy.
Well, by now, Ms. Jo must be on her way to the States for good. She is a widow, btw and also a lola. She was with her daughter who is also so beautiful. But she will come home again to attend the wedding of her other daughter this
